H.P. Lovecraft and the Mythos

lovecraft

Lets start at the beginning, I learned quite early about Lovecraft due to Role Playing Games. I have never played Call of Cthulhu but other games are influenced greatly by the Mythos. Years later I started to create a new “world” for a possible RPG campaign and I got more interested in Lovecraft and his Mythos, then I found out that there where Lovecraft movies and movies inspired by the mythos and I looked up as many as I could find and start watching them. To my surprise there where movies that I had seen at a younger age and I loved them but could never find them. I own quite a lot of movies (over 1200), and there is a portion of that dedicated to Lovecraft so to say.

Re-Animator was one of the first movies I saw long ago, Necronomicon, From Beyond and Lurking Fear. After a while Dagon and a lot other movies came into my collection.

The whole feeling of the movies stayed with me for a Long time, I started to watch other movies and series and loved some of them not realizing that they where Inspired by Lovecraft or the Mythos. Babylon 5 comes into mind, there are so many more but then this post will be 10.000+ words.

So realizing that I like Lovecraft that much I began my fascination with the Mythos in my Role Play Games and I still wanted to read the books, but I was not able to.

Not long ago my girlfriend started listening to audiobooks on YouTube and she seemed to enjoy it. I decided to give it a go as well as I always wanted to read the works of H.P. Lovecraft and others who have contributed to his Cthulhu Mythos.

Why don’t I read the books? Well due to my attention span (specially the last 6 or 7 years) it is very hard to read a book. After reading 5 sentences I have to start all over because I have lost the trail the story was going and after rereading things a third time It becomes very annoying. So audiobooks seem to be my way to “read” books.

Now I have listened to almost all H.P. Lovecraft stories and some of other authors in the Cthulhu Mythos. The whole we are small in comparison to the Universe is a great theme and the horrors in the Mythos are just beyond everything else (pun intended). The old fashioned use of words are also a big reason the stories “feel” a certain way. It is Horror or Supernatural but in a somewhat poetic way.

My favorite stores must be: At the Mountain of Madness, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. To be honest I like almost all of the stories and poems that H.P. Lovecraft wrote. Now other books are on the list, mythos books that are “good enough”.

I am thankful that I have “read” all his work and that I “read” mythos related books. The difference between the movie adaptations and the stories are big but some of the movies are still some of my favourites.
